What is wolv-tv?
Our Background
WOLV-TV was founded in 1994 by three students: Danny Schwab, Scott Doyne, and Jeff Holzhausen, to broadcast Michigan Ice Hockey games. Throughout the past 30 years, WOLV-TV has evolved into an television organization that specializes in producing a variety of shows that span across all our branches, including News, Sports, and Entertainment. Sponsored by the University of Michigan’s Department of Film, Television, and Media (FTVM), we are located in North Quad on central campus where we spend the majority of our time filming in Studio A.
Where do our members fit in?
EVERYWHERE! Each show successfully functions because of its dedicated crew. New members start at WOLV-TV by being taught to operate a camera, run the tele-prompter, mix the audio, edit, write scripts, conduct live interviews, or really, whatever job the show needs. We highly encourage new members to try out new positions in different shows; then, if they are interested, a member can decide to apply for a larger role by becoming a producer or director through our selection process.
Our positions
Writers, Actors, Editors, Reporters, Floor Managers, and More!
other events
Besides just creating content, each member gets the opportunity to attend networking and any other events hosted by WOLV-TV.
networking opportunities
In the Winter Term of 2024, WOLV-TV had the pleasure of inviting Emmy-nominated director and UM alumni, Mark Cendrowski, to teach students a glimpse of the ins and outs of production life. Mark, known for directing over 200 episodes of The Big Bang Theory, described to students an average week in the life of live sitcom television production. Mark also took students through mock tapings of scenes from shows like Call Me Kat and The Neighborhood. Selected students were able to work alongside Mark as they gave actors suggestions and got to look at different camera angles in a mock video village setup.
In the Winter Term of 2025, WOLV-TV had the opportunity of inviting writer and director Maegan Houang for a Q&A and viewing of an episode she wrote for on the award-winning show, Shōgun. Maegan is well-versed in all areas of filmmaking, from short films to television to music videos, she discussed a range of subjects, including her work on the Emmy Award-winning show Shōgun, her music videos for artists like Mitski, and the growing popularity of Asian stories as well as non-English television and film.
unique trips
WOLV-TV takes an annual trip to WDIV Local 4 in Detroit, MI. We are given a tour of their offices, broadcasting studios, and control room. This is a great opportunity for our members to meet individuals who are currently working in the industry.

What is the time commitment?
WOLV-TV does not demand any time commitment from our members, however, we like to say that members will “get out of the club as much as they put in.” Additionally, if you would like to become more involved, Producers, Directors, and Members of the Executive Board, are expected to put in more time as they take on greater responsibilities.
If you are considering joining WOLV, but only have two hours per week, there is a place for you here. If you are considering joining and have 10 hours a week to give, WOLV encourages that as well!
